Making GREAT Decisions

This new model that we have been presented with, I believe, is a more accurate representation of how all people make decisions, myself included. In this scenario, I can certainly say that I have a tendency to like making my own decisions. Deciding is controlling, and I hope never to put control of my life in hands but my own. However, this is only for the important things. There are occasions where passive decision making will pass an efficient method in deciding, but then you must be carefully determining when you are making decisions and when you are allowing things to fall into place. Both means have their appropriateness and uses, but you have to know when each is appropriate. I take advantage of both of these decision making-options finding that when something is not worth the fight or stress, passive decision making is appropriate and when matters are more pressing in their importance, thought and action should be taken in said decision.

Community Resources

The government, on each of its three levels, has a multitude of services that create pathways for its citizens to achieve overall health. You will find that a lot of the services overlap and that certain facets of health are more easily and more widely catered to in our society. I feel that physical health is addressed on all three levels of government. Locally, there are many gyms and fitness centers—like the YMCA, Pennbriar, Nautilus, and other private clubs. On both the national and state levels, there are laws that require schools to enforce certain health rules like the lunches provided and the time we spend in a gym-like setting. Of course, there are local hospitals and the convenience of helicopters to fly you to other more capable hospitals in this state as well for physical health needs.

I feel that in many situations, spiritual, mental, and emotional health can be addressed in similar ways. Local churches often have support groups available along with worship services, and this spiritual experience is beneficial to both of these health categories. For more serious issues, the state and nation provide well-trained therapists for the problems that friends, families, and school guidance counselors cannot offer. The three of these categories can easily be addressed through simple communication with another being. If you’re not comfortable with this, libraries are, in fact, a great resource for books on certain issues. You could books that address every one of the six components of health.

Environmental health is also addressed on each of the levels of government. In the area in which one lives, there are many environmental groups that can be participated in such as recycling clubs and other activities that better your environment. I think it is often neglected that your environment includes the well-being and status of area and that groups that help people specifically in an environment go ignored, like food pantries and soup kitchens. Both of these examples can be found on a state level and are reflected in the laws created on a national level. As each of the six components of health work and rely on each other, so do our levels of government in providing the population with what we need to maintain healthy lifestyles.

Assignment 1: Introductions

Allex Coles
Blogging is an excellent educational tool that will allow our class to share and view each other’s thoughts and opinions. As for what I hope to learn, I can only hope that I leave this class with the new information that this class has to offer and the ability to apply my new knowledge to my everyday life. My interests include, but are not limited to: skiing in the winter, swimming in the summer, football & Madden, keeping my brother in line, small children, and music and literature all year long. I have a particular interest in musical theatre but have participated in many non-musical plays. Watching my brother has become as much of a responsibility as an amusing hobby for me. He and I get along excellently; you won’t find a team like Harold and me. In regards to my future, I’m still figuring everything out. I’d love to pursue an arts career—music and/or literature specifically, but realistically, neither is a wise a choice. For the past two years, I’ve been humoring the idea of going into genetics and specializing in PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis). I’m looking forward to the rest of this semester.
